EXPLORE
OLD TOWN.
Roman remains, Bulgarian Revival architecture, quiet cobbled streets, galleries and unforgettable views over Plovdiv. The district stretches across the historic Three Hills and preserves some of the city’s most iconic houses, courtyards and archaeological landmarks.
We recommend comfortable shoes if you plan to explore the district on foot — the Old Town is best experienced by walking its cobbled streets and stepped lanes.
A CITY
IN LAYERS.
Plovdiv’s Old Town rises across the historic Three Hills, where traces of a Thracian settlement evolved into the ancient city of Philippopolis. Roman streets, fortifications and the remarkably preserved theatre remain part of its living landscape.
During the Bulgarian National Revival in the 18th and 19th centuries, prosperous merchants built the richly ornamented houses and courtyards that shape the neighbourhood today. Their painted interiors, carved ceilings and expressive façades connect the district’s commercial past with its present identity as a cultural centre.
Today the Old Town is an architectural and historical reserve, with museums, permanent art collections, churches, galleries and occasional contemporary exhibitions woven into its pedestrian streets. It remains one of the most atmospheric parts of Plovdiv — a place where archaeological layers, National Revival houses and panoramic terraces coexist within a compact walkable quarter.
